Concept:

YAKU, is a “Chifa” restaurant lounge brought to you by Fraga-Rosenfeld.  Chifa is the fusion of Chinese and Peruvian cuisine developed by Chinese immigrants to Peru in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also used to define a restaurant where this type of fare is served and is recognized as an ever-evolving style of cooking. The name YAKU means “water” in Quechua (Incan Language) and is intended to capture Asian-influenced Andean culinary styles unique to the region.

Cuisine:

Menu highlights include a Dim Sum menu consisting of Chinese Peruvian fusion items like Novoandine Wontons filled with chicken and quinoa and Crispy Salmon and Rice Rolls.  The main menu offers appetizers and entrees including Peruvian main dishes like Aji de Gallina alongside Chinese dishes like Noodles and Sweet and Sour Chicken.

Design:

The unique design is credited to Grupo7, the architecture and interiors firm that also designed Latin Concepts’ Mate, Ceviche Restaurants, and Nena along with other well known downtown spots such as Mio Restaurant and K Street Lounge. YAKU has an elegant and modern interior that plays with the contrast of monochromatic tones, selective accents of chartreuse, and a colorful collection of specially commissioned pop paintings of indigenous peoples of Ecuador by Hernando Alzate.

The dynamic two-level space is intersected by a mezzanine that bridges the restaurant from one corner to the other leaving clear views down to the bar and dining room and creating a dynamic connection between the different spaces of the restaurant.  From the second level, a whimsical composition of elegant Italian light fixtures filters a dramatic city skyline view.  As one approaches YAKU from Clarendon Boulevard, these lights also act as an elegant and subtle beacon seen through 20 foot high windows, framing the interior of a venue that is as special from the outside as it is inside.
